Forest of storm-felled trees was protected in Kajaani

he Finnish Natural Heritage Foundation has protected a forest ravaged by a thunderstorm in Hannusranta in Kajaani. The conservation area, which was named Paatsamakorpi, was hit by a strong downburst in June 2020, which left the forest with hundreds of cubic metres of windthrow. The moist mixed forest is over a hundred years old and now covers over 10.5 hectares.

Pentti Linkola’s memorial forest will be founded in Riuttasalo in Toivakka, which is located in Central Finland near Päijänne, as a joint purchase by the Finnish Natural Heritage Foundation and Päijänne Natural Heritage Foundation. Kurikanvuori in Sahalahti, in Kangasala in the Pirkanmaa region, will be protected as Pertti Linkola’s memorial grove.

The Natural Heritage Foundation has recently purchased a handsome forest in Somero in Southwest Finland. Pyysmäki forest is located in the most south-westerly part of the southern boreal coniferous zone in Southwestern Häme. The eight-hectare forest consists mostly of spruce-dominated fresh heath of the bilberry type, with tall pines, old silver birch, and thick aspen.

The Finnish Natural Heritage Foundation, the societies Etelä-Savon lintuharrastajat Oriolus ry, Itä-Savon luonnonsuojeluyhdistys ry and Kangasniemen Luonto ry, as well as Keep the Archipelago Tidy and the South Savo district of the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation launched a campaign in July 2021 with the aim to find and protect a home for the golden oriole in the forests of South Savo.
