Ylpässuo is a small but beautiful aapa moor in Kiuruvesi, in the north-western corner of North Savo. The moor contains water horsetail-dominated wet swamp fen, which is rare in this region. The landscape is enlivened by numerous small patches of forest with trees in a natural state.

Willow grouse can still be found in Ylpässuo, and the forest around the edges of the moor is home to endangered willow tits. The cranberry bushes yield plenty of berries.

Despite the edges of the moor having been drained, the moor has still retained its original character. Some of the edges could most likely be restored by covering up the ditches or turning the ditch water back towards the moor.

In 2020, when the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) celebrated its tenth anniversary, the university donated 10,000 euros to a joint campaign run by the Finnish Natural Heritage Foundation and the University of Eastern Finland. The proceeds of this campaign made it possible to purchase this 11-hectare moor.
