There will be a new conservation area created in Töysä, Alavus, where the foundation purchased a forest of approximately 30 hectares. The area borders in four places on four different ponds, and since the Finnish name ‘Lampila’ refers to the ponds, we have decided that the original name is suitable also for the new conservation area. The ponds of Pyörähäinen and Haveri have the longest shorelines in this place. The ponds are favoured by several water birds and cranes nesting in their proximity.
The forest is extraordinarily beautiful and intact with no tree stubs appearing in this area, where the tree stand has reached its full growth everywhere. The diversity and appeal of the area are increased especially by the forms of the terrain and the multitude of its small waterways. There are primarily conifers growing in the forest together with alders, birches, and aspens appearing here and there in places that used to be meadows. The area includes several lichen-covered rocks with swampy depressions located between them, creating a place for galliforms to conduct their displays in the spring. The rock creates a gorgeous cliff that descends towards the Pyörähäinen pond.
The amount of significant decayed wood is not very large at the moment in Lampila, but fortunately, nature will secure that there will be more of it created in the course of the years. What is essential is that the exuberant ground is intact with the structure of the forest being natural. The former owners had made sure that the ground had its natural coverings by not allowing clear-cuttings to be performed in the forest, and during the course of the past few decades, there have only been windfalls collected in this area. From now on, they will also be left in their place. The appeal of Lampila is also increased by its location in an extraordinarily quiet forest-covered area far away from large roads and population centres.
Coming into possession of the farm and its surrounding fields, the owners decided to sell Lampila to the foundation to have the area placed under protection without delay.
