In early 2023, the Finnish Natural Heritage Foundation purchased a good-sized forest area on Suoparsaari island in Kitee. As well as old mixed forest, the area also includes two small islands, flood plains and around a kilometre of shoreline along lake Orivesi.

The protection of Suoparsaari conservation area was part of the launch of the conservation campaign Protect a Part of Eastern Finland.
