In June 2023, the Finnish Natural Heritage Foundation purchased a fifty hectare parcel of land in Kontiosuo, Kuusamo. The area was purchased with the help of a significant donation by the non-profit organisation Save Pond Hockey.

As an aapa mire with many ponds, Kontiosuo is well suited to be donated by Save Pond Hockey. The entire mire is dotted with small open water ponds. This also makes Kontiosuo a great place for birds. Several pairs of waders such as wood sandpipers and greenshanks nest in the area. More demanding waders, such as the broad-billed sandpiper and the extremely endangered ruff, have also been observed.

On the day of the sale, the couple who sold the area to the Finnish Natural Heritage Foundation was also pleased that the area will be protected. Now that the area is a protected, the carbon storage which has been accumulating in Kontiosuo for thousands of years will remain for the coming millennia as a soft, safe bed below the varied species of the mire.
