A large flooding field of approximately 10 hectares in Ahonkylä village in Liperi, which is a nationally important bird area. The bird field sees numerous endangered species nesting and resting on their migrations in spring and autumn. In particularly in springtime, hundreds or even thousands of water birds, geese and waders can be seen in the area, including the endangered ruff. Some of the rarer species which have been seen in the area include the green-winged teal, the ruddy shelduck, the bar-headed goose, the pectoral sandpiper, the woodchat shrike and the lesser grey shrike.

At the same time as protecting Ahonkylä bird fields, the Finnish Natural Heritage Foundation also launched the Protect bird habitats fundraising campaign, which aims to protect areas with important bird populations.
